Poison Ivy Remedies

Water

The simplest of all poison ivy remedies. Immediately rinse off with water if you believe you've been exposed to poison ivy.

If you're on the trail or in the woods use water from your canteen, ice from your cooler or water from the nearest stream.

Alcohol And Water

Another one of the simpler poison ivy remedies is to pour rubbing alcohol over the affected skin areas immediately after being exposed. Then rinse the alcohol off with water.

If you don't have alcohol handy, use moist towelettes or baby wipes and then rinse the alcohol off with water.

Oatmeal

Before going to bed, take an oatmeal bath. Take 1 cup of oatmeal, put it in a handkerchief and tie it over the faucet. Allow warm water to run through it and bathe for 20 to 30 minutes.

Another way to receive the benefits of oatmeal is through the use of the popular skin care product called Aveeno. You can apply it with a wash cloth to the rashed skin or you can use it in the bath.

Passion Flower, Skullcap, St. John's Wort and Oats

This combination will soothe the nervous system and is one of the most effective poison ivy remedies.

Mix together two tablespoons of passion flower, 2 tablespoons of skullcap, 1 tablespoon of oats, and 1/2 tablespoon of St. John's wort. Measure out about 40 drops, or 2 dropperfuls of the tincture and take it four times a day.

You can also put this dosage in a small glass and mix A little water in or your favorite fruit juice to make it even more tasty. Continue until the rash heals.

Plantain

Make a poultice from plantain leaves and smear it on the area of skin that needs to be addressed.

Mud Pack

This is one of the most soothing poison ivy remedies. Mix water into a bentonite clay mud pack until it forms a runny paste.

Add 1/2 teaspoon of powdered Oregon grape root to the Clay mixture. And finally, add a drop of lavender essential oil to produce a cooling effect.

Mix this up real good and smear it over the infected skin.

Aloe

The gel that is contained inside the Aloe plant leaves has also been known to be one of the better poison ivy remedies.

Simply slice open a leaf from this plant and rub it on the rash. Do this several times a day.

Antihistamines

Oral antihistamines also rank high on the list of poison ivy remedies. Benadryl and Chlor-Trimeton are two of the more popular brands.

If your hay fever medicine is an antihistamine, you could take that and get some relief.

Jewelweed

Topping the list of poison ivy remedies. Crush up the leaves, stems and the tops of the roots of Jewelweed, and apply the juice to the affected areas of your skin.

Calamine Lotion

Calamine lotion soothes the skin by cooling it and is one of the most popular poison ivy remedies.

This cooling action constricts the blood vessels of the skin therefore reducing the oozing and itching symptoms.

Apply calamine lotion three or four times a day.

Soapwort

Try the juice of the Soapwort plant to wash off the areas of skin that have been subjected to poison ivy.

Peppermint

This concoction has been called one of the best poison ivy remedies. Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 1/2 cup of water and add enough cosmetic clay to make a creamy paste consistency.

Add about 25 drops of peppermint oil and apply the paste to the affected area.

Another alternative is to mix about 30 drops of peppermint oil to a full bottle of calamine lotion, shake it up real good and then apply it on the rashed skin.

Echinacea

Make a mixture with 1 part Echinacea and 3 parts water. Use this to rinse off the rashed skin several times a day.

Baking Soda

Another one of the more effective poison ivy remedies. Mix Baking Soda and water to form a paste and apply it to the affected area.
