Anemia

Anemia is one of the common dietary deficiency diseases in which the blood is deficient in the body. It results in the lack of iron and hemoglobin in the body. Deficiency of hemoglobin results in poor functioning of the respiratory system, as it carries oxygen from lungs to other body parts.

Causes of Anemia

- Deficiency of iron in the diet is the major cause of anemia
- People with hemorrhoids (piles) often lose great amounts of blood and this may sometimes leads to anemia
- Deficiency of vitamins in the body (especially folate and vitamin C) is also responsible in causing anemia. This anemia is called as vitamin deficiency anemia
- Chronic diseases like cancer may also cause anemia, especially when the person undergoes treatments by radiotherapy and chemotherapy

- Pale appearance of skin due to the loss of blood
- Discoloration of the nails and the lips
- Patient usually feels fatigue and unable to work for long hours
- Insomnia is also commonly observed with anemic patients
- Digestive problems like indigestion, constipation and flatulence may sometimes also be seen
- Person suffering from anemia also finds difficult to breathe
- The person feels cold often. The hands and feet are felt as cold
- Heartbeats will be quite rapid. Minor activities can raise the heartbeat excessively

- Take healthy diet, rich in iron such as whole grain cereals, legumes, nuts, dry dates, beet root, red meat, especially beef and pulses
- Person suffering from vitamin deficiency anemia should take diet rich in vitamins such as eggs, fish, organ meats and milk products such as cheese
- If person is deficient of folic acid, he should consume green leafy vegetables and food grains in his diet
- Some natural sources of vitamin C that will help you in the treatment of vitamin deficient anemia are Fresh citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, indian gooseberry, capsicum and tomatoes

Following are some of the effective home remedies for anemia:



- Patient suffering from anemia must include organ meats like kidney and liver in the diet
- Eat apples daily as they have high iron contents and are very effective anemia remedy
- Beetroot are also rich in iron and various other minerals. So, person suffering from anemia should include it in his diet for treating anemia
- Cold water bath is also very beneficial effects in anemia. A person with anemia must have at least two cold water baths a day

Herbal Remedies for Anemia

Following are some of the effective herbal remedies for anemia:

- Wormwood (Afsanthim) is prescribed for the treatment of anemia, due to its iron-rich content
- Fenugreek (Methi) works as an effective blood tonic. It is also helpful in curing anemia during menstruation in girls. It’s seeds are also very good when the anemia is cured, because they help to maintain the content of iron in the body
- Celery (Ajmoda) is also extremely rich source of dietary iron. When taken in a solution with carrot juice, celery can be an efficacious cure for all blood ailments, including anemia
- Dill (Sowa) is taken to regulate the flow during the menstrual cycle. About 60 grams of sowa taken with a teaspoonful amount of parsley juice helps in anemia during periods.
